Tinsel Shopping With Tigers / Where There Is Love There Is Life by Steven Aron Williams
This piece reflects an encounter I had whilst in India. Mysore specifically just before Christmas a few years back. I was on the hunt for tinsel to decorate our hotel room. Whilst roaming the hectic markets, being pulled left right and centre, the air pungent with incense, spices and the occasional waft of urine. The experience as with much of India was overwhelming when suddenly the crowds and cars parted allowing a procession of tigers, gods deities and devotees to march through to the beat of drums and jingle of bells.
It was as it someone had pressed pause on everyday life for a few moments to celebrate existence in all its outlandish vibrancy and colour. The elaborate costumes sparkled as people danced with melting makeup in the unrelenting sun. Not everyone looked happy about participating but they marched on regardless with dedication to the cause. After they’d swept through, everyday life resumed as if nothing had ever happened.
To this day I’m still not sure what it was all about but I recall passing a graffitied wall with the face of Gandhi and the words “Where there is love there is life” The sentiment seemed to fit the day…
